Joseph, i’m building from the plans. the leg dimension appears to be 1 and 1/2 inches too long. perhaps the designer forgot to add the top plate into the figuring.. What do you want to simplify about it? the very top image looks like basic, non-mortise & tenon, joinery that should involve just cutting boards to length and screwing them together.. 40 fine woodworking only heavy-duty tool i used was a 3-hp tablesaw. ripping lots of 8/4 maple puts a strain on even a large saw, so use a clean, sharp blade. a durable workbench requires beefy parts.
